Day 5 & 6

On Friday, I learned a little bit about Photoshop. I was able to see how a collateral folder was made for a client. During this process I witnessed how specific pictures are picked out for the collateral folder itself. I also learned certain terms such as ‘bleed’ and ‘dpi.’

Monday, I saw how a re-voiceover was accomplished to fit a commercial and learned the difference between A-roll and B-roll. I also saw the makings of a DVD for a client. The DVD included all of the final commercial and all the extra’s or original shots that were not included in the commercial itself.

Day 4

Today I spent my day learning how to edit video and audio elements for television commercials. I was able to observe how a producer places specific shots together in a way that flows aesthetically from one scene to the next. Following, I witnessed how voice over’s are administered so that specific scenes fit to what is being said. I was flattered that my opinion was considered for choice of scene shots.
Seeing the final product was the best part of my day because, in a way, it was rewarding knowing that I was involved. To see a process start from scratch and evolve into a final product is a neat experience and a reward of its own. Not often does one think of all the work and effort that goes into producing a commercial.
From this point forward, I’ll forever watch TV commercials with a new perspective.

Day 3

Today I drove to work with a feeling of excitement; I would be involved in the production of a TV commercial. I have always been curious as to how commercials are shot, and then edited together.
At the commercial taping, I took photographs of the setup and the scene takes as they took place. I was a grip for the director, meaning that I helped with the lighting and carrying of equipment to and from scene locations. Our scenes took place in two separate locations and required us to drive back and forth across town. It is amazing the time and effort that goes into making a :30 second commercial.
Tomorrow I get to see how the final product turns out!

Day 2

My day began with the weekly staff meeting. I always imagined meetings to be conducted in a board room with a boss at the head of the table scolding and ordering his employees around. To my surprise, the meeting was quite entertaining and informative. Everybody had no problem talking trash to one another, joking around, and laughing. There were numerous times that, as a whole, we would wander off topic but, we would find ourselves back on point promptly. The best part about the meeting was where it was held. We were not in a board room sitting at a giant table but, instead we sat in a circle on comfortable seats and couches. The atmosphere altogether was very chill and relaxed.

As the day went on, I gathered research on a “category”; attempting to find businesses of this “category” that are in need of PS Media help. I took note of whether or not the specific business had a website and whether or not the business could use an update or facelift to their website.

After working on this project for some time, I accompanied Michelle to a ground breaking ceremony of a new commercial business project. The weather was beyond awesome with the sun gleaming down on its audience. Having resided in Pullman for the past several months, it has been awhile since I have felt or witnessed great weather.

Ending my day, I played receptionist and took calls as I fooled around with a new demo of software used for making electronic billboard ads. All in all, today was a good day.

Day 1

Hello, I am  Hayden and am currently working an internship with P.S. Media. I’ve been instructed to conduct a blog throughout my experiences here to inform and entertain its readers. At this moment in time, I am a student at WSU and I plan on majoring in Digital Technology and Culture with a minor in Business Administration.

Today is my first day at P.S. Media. After cleaning out my desk space and transporting discarded CPU’s to storage, I made introductions and overviewed a very basic plan of how my sentence here will be spent. Once the plan was set into motion, I began doing research on electronic reader boards; more specifically how to use certain programs for creating messaging digital reader boards. Towards the end of the day I was moved to the front of the office to assume the duties of receptionist. Time will tell if that is a promotion or demotion.

I was also just informed that making the first pot of coffee each day has been “trickle-down” delegated to my list of responsibilities. (I anticipate picking up dry cleaning to be added to that list by week’s end.)

Here’s to a summer of working to learn, or learning to work. Wish me luck!
